Our Horses
Most of our horses are named after native American tribes or dwelling locations.
Cherokee - Mare
Breed: Quarter Horse
Color: Buckskin
Cherokee was our first horse, she is the female leader of our herd. She is a well seasoned horse and wonderful for beginners but still has enough giddy-up for an experienced rider.
Eclipse - Gelding
Breed: Unknown
Color: Ever changing.
Eclipse's name suits him well, his color changes from light brown to black depending on the time of year. Due to his long standing here at the camp, Eclipse is our alpha male. He is an easy rider and enjoys bareback rides through the pond.
Kiowa - Mare
Breed: Welsh Pony
Color: Red Chestnut with flaxen mane
Kiowa is amazing with ground work, anyone can lead her! She is very non-threatening because of her pony size, but don't be fooled - she has a lot of spunk! Kiowa is wonderful for the very experienced that will enjoy a bucking adventure! Looking for a helpful trainer.
Shawnee - Mare
Breed: Paint
Color: Overo Paint
Shawnee is one of our younger horses, very calm natured until it comes to feeding time. Just call out her name and she comes running, especially loves when the campers bring her carrot treats. Being trained to respond to voice commands.
Chaco - Gelding
Breed:Quarter Horse
Color: Dun Buckskin
Chaco was born in 2005 and was our first foal at Camp Tonkawa, son of Cherokee. He is still in training and not quite full grown.
Navajo - Gelding
Breed: Appaloosa
Color: Appaloosa
Navajo is our retired jousting horse! He was once used in the Renaissance Festivals. Navajo was a wonderful donated addition to our herd, he is fearless on trail rides! He is our Houdini!! He has his own way of getting out of the pasture because the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Osage - Mare
Breed: Quarter Horse
Color: Chestnut
Osage is our only registered Quarter Horse and is a perfect specimen of the breed! She is mild mannered and great for the inexperienced rider, she is not easily spooked.
Tahlequah - Mare
Breed: Quarter Horse
Color: Chestnut
Tahlequah is young and spunky! She is still attached to her mother, Osage. Whenever they are separated, Tahlequah whinnies for her mom. She is a petite horse and is also still in training.
Scout - Mare
Breed: Paint
Color: Tobiano Paint
Scout was born in 2007 and is the second foal but our first filly at Camp Tonkawa. She is young but has already had a name change so some of you might know her as Storm.
Choctaw - Gelding
Breed: Tennessee Walking Horse
Color: Solid Brown
Choctaw was donated to Camp Tonkawa. He is difficult to catch but once you've gotten him he is wonderful. Because he is a Tennessee Walker, he is a gaited, smooth rider and has become a popular horse here and the camp! He has a very long tail, it touches the ground.
