Class Description
At any time, anywhere, things can go wrong and you might find yourself in a survival situation. You can survive 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. To stay alive, you must find or build a shelter, obtain "safe" drinking water, start a fire and gather food. This class will teach you how to build a simple shelter using natural materials, start a fire without matches, and find safe drinking water. (Gathering food will be taught in the Primitive Survival Skills Class 2.) It is also nice to know how to signal for help and aide rescuers in finding you.
A non-folding knife is recomended. You can bring your own or purchase a Swiss Mora surival knife at the camp for $20-$25. (Please let us know if you need to buy a knife when you register) This class is open to all who are responsible enough to handle sharp tools on their own.
Topics include:
- finding natural shelters
- building a debris hut
- making cordage
- gathering water

Girl Scout Troop 495 came from Allen, for Primitive Survival One Camp in March 2010. Randy Scism was the lead instructor, with Brandon Olecha. Also had CIT Shawn Billips, and Guest instructor Tim McCoy from Oklahoma to assist. The troop all kept their Positive Mental Attitudes through the rain on Sunday, and are planning to return this summer for part two, before they lead their Service Unit in the fall "I will survive" camp, part of their Silver Award.
Young boy scouts working on bow drills.
Wow the Girl Scouts are on Fire!!!
We had representatives from 4 different Cadette troops out for the Primitive Survival One Camp Jan 16-17, 2010. (Plus one brave Boy Scout.) Great shelters were built, and three bow drill fires were started!!! It was awesome to see such enthusiastic young people, learning life skills that boost self esteem like nothing else can. They all plan to return for the Primitive Survival Two Camp, either February 20-21, or September 18-19, of this year. One of the troops went home and organized a survival event for their service unit to complete the requirements for their Outdoor Survival Interest Project!
