The Who, What, Where, & Why of Camp Tonkawa
Founded by The Holtzman Family, Camp Tonkawa is a Non-Profit Nature Awareness Learning Center for Children and Adults that gives "hands on" experience in the great outdoors! It's a 35 acre tract of land 45-60 minutes North of Dallas and 20 mins. northeast of Denton Tx. The property is a certified wildlife refuge. The woods of oak and junipers have plenty of trails, a small creek, fishing pond, swimming pond, pasture area, organic garden, barn, a "long house" where most all the classes are held, outdoor showers, and our classic soilettes (composting toilets).
As mentioned on our front page, our mission is to reconnect mankind with nature. We believe this can be accomplished by "hands on" teaching of the ancient Native American skills of "nature awareness" and "primitive wilderness survival". By doing this we hope that a respect and appreciation for our Earth will be gained, this in turn will help not only our society but the world as a whole. Trained instructors are from the "Tom Brown's Tracking, Nature and Wilderness Survival School" and the Jon Young's "Wilderness Awareness School" and have other classes, achievements, and experiences under their belts!
Camp Tonkawa is a Not for Profit organization. We are family run and enjoy meeting and sharing our love of the out-of-doors with other families. Our sons are all involved in Scouting (2 Eagle & one on the way) and we have made it a big priority to cater to both the Girl and Boy Scouts.
At any of the overnight camps, we will begin Saturday morning and finish up Sunday around 2:30 p.m. During this overnight stay, (bring your own tent or rent one from us) learning will be mixed with songs, games & crafts. We have a variety of classes such as: Primitive Survival Skills, Nature Awareness, Camp Cooking Skills, Backpacking, Deer Hide Tanning, Orienteering, and Native American Studies just to name a few. To see the list of our classes, just go to our class listing page. To view our year long schedule at a glance, go to our schedule.
The meals we provide are wholesome foods and occasionally have organic produce from our garden during the proper growing season. Vegetarian fare is typically offered but please inform us if this is your food choice or not so that we can cater to you.
Prices vary for the classes we offer and are listed on each classes detailed description page. Group, family, and scout discounts are worked out on an individual basis. If you have a group that is interested in one of our camps/classes but the date doesn't work for you, we can schedule a time for you.
Camp Tonkawa is located just 25 minutes N.E. of Denton in Collinsville (50 min. from Lewisville or Plano area). See our map for detailed directions.
